About the Item
The case of this Louis XV period mantel clock is attributed to Jean Joseph de Saint-Germain (Paris, 1719-1791). Decorated with a scrolled leaf motif throughout, the fine case is surmounted by an Asian figure in costume, holding a parasol and sitting on a throne.
The clock itself was created by Nicolas Charles du Tertre (1715-1793), who worked in Paris throughout the 18th Century, and was one of the finest clock makers of his time. The enamel dial is signed 'CHARLES DU TERTRE A PARIS' and features with finely detailed gilt metal hands with Roman and Arabic numerals.
Inspired by the arts and design from China, Japan and other Asian countries, the Chinoiserie style reached its peak popularity in the mid-18th Century. The term refers to imitation Asian art, which originated in Europe rather than the East. Typical features of Chinoiserie design feature exotic landscapes, populated by fanciful landscapes, animals, architecture and people. Rococ design can also be seen in this clock. This style is characterised by its elaborate carved forms, ornate curves and floral motifs. The acanthus leaf is one of the basic motifs of Rococo design, and is rendered in a highly stylised rather than naturalistic fashion. Often Rococo design is asymmetric in style, meaning that one side of pattern does not mirror the other.
