About the Item

An Incredible 18th Century Period Louis XVI Ormolu Mantel Clock with two “Seated Spaniel” Dog Figures, the Movement by Noël Bourret (1755–1803), Signed Bourret à Paris. The dial is encased within a drum-form housing enriched with scrollwork and floral garlands in gilt bronze. The clock is surmounted by a winged figure of Cupid seated among clouds, holding two torches, symbolizing love and constancy. Beneath the dial, two extremely finely cast reclining spaniels are positioned back-to-back, their long fur and relaxed poses rendered in meticulous detail. The rectangular base with rounded ends is adorned with classical motifs including draped swags, a central laurel wreath, and tasseled fringe, all supported on four tapering turned feet headed by flower-filled baskets. The clock movement is by Noël Bourret (1755–1803), a distinguished Parisian clockmaker active from the late Louis XVI period through the early years of the Directoire. Bourret worked from the Palais-Royal—then known as the Palais de l’Égalité and later the Palais du Tribunat—where he collaborated with leading bronziers such as Pierre-Philippe Thomire. He produced numerous high-quality timepieces featuring elaborate gilt bronze cases. His clientele included notable figures such as the revolutionary lawyer Merlin de Thionville and Monsieur d’Espagnac. Archival records note that in 1800, Bourret supplied goods valued at 7,400 francs to Monsieur de Mirepoix, which may have included a comparable clock now housed in the Hermitage Museum. His work is characterized by precision movements and refined ornamentation, often integrating mythological and animal subjects with richly gilded mounts. A comparable mantel clock signed Ridel à Paris, closely following the same model but missing one of Cupid’s torches, was sold at Christie’s, New York, on 18 May 2006 for USD 28,800 (lot 735). The present example, signed Bourret à Paris, is by a more prominent and highly regarded maker. Retaining both original torches and its much finer in quality and chasing, and much nicer gilding, preserving the full decorative composition, it represents a more complete and distinguished example of late 18th-century Parisian horology.
