A Superb and very rare Engraved Thomas Cole Mantle Clock
Located in London, GB
An exceptional and perhaps unique English fusee mantle clock timepiece by one of the nineteenth centuries greatest clock makers. Although not signed by Thomas Cole, this mantle or table clock can be safely attributed to Thomas Cole. The multi layed case, which is typical of Cole, the horizontal lines in the background of the engraving, and the quality of the engraving, means this clock could only be by Cole. The eight day single chain fusee movement. The engraving for the retailer has been fitted into the available space, and would have been done after the clock has been completed by Thomas Cole (J.B. Hawkins). The inset silvered dial is of typical Cole design with finely engraved rococo and floral decoration, black Roman numerals and fleur de lyes hands. This style of dial is noted on many examples of Thomas Cole clocks...

French Antique Ormolu Mantel Clock by Leroy Commemorating Napoleon Bonaparte

This fine mantel clock is cast entirely in ormolu by celebrated Parisian clockmaker Leroy and commemorates the return of Napoleon's ashes to France in 1840. The clock is set on a rectangular, tiered base with four decorative feet. The lower tier is centred with a sleeping lion above a plaque showing the scarf, sword and hat of Napoleon. There is a relief plaque above the lion showing a ship off St Helena (the location of Napoleon's exile) and to either side further decorations formed as martial trophies. To the top of the plaque is a portrait medallion of Napoleon with winged cherubs and the letter 'N'. The circular dial of the clock, signed 'Leroy a Paris', is set to the centre above the base within an ormolu border and flanked by the figures of France and an eagle to either side. Between them they hold an urn, which bears the inscription 'Ste Helene / 5 Mai 1821'. The figure of France holds a flag inscribed 'France 1840.' This oval white marble clock is applied with high quality bronze and ormolu mounts. The base encloses a French 8-day, twin barrel movement with a silk suspension and a count wheel strike on the bell. The ormolu dial has Roman numerals in blue and white enamels and is set within a rope border surrounded by naval panoplies and a coronet. The sides are embellished with putti with double fish-tails holding a long shell horn in each hand. On top of the clock is a bronze group of the dying Nelson collapsing into the arms of two sailors. With pendulum and key. Stamped on the back plate René à Paris. English, with a French movement, circa 1840. The bronze group of the falling Nelson being supported by two sailors is reminiscent of the positioning adopted by Samuel Drummond in his original version of The Death of Nelson...
