About the Item

A majestic representation of Westminster Abbey, this rare three-train fuseé architectural skeleton clock of exceptional workmanship was crafted by Evans of Handsworth, Birmingham. The maker is known as one of the first creators of architectural skeleton clocks, which first appeared in the mid-19th century. Evan's clocks were consistently made to the highest standards, and are distinguished by their grand size and robust materials intended to last. The Westminster Abbey design is one of the best known and sought after motifs for architectural skeleton clocks, and those created by Evans are the most exquisite and technically superior. While most of Evan's Westminster clocks featured a two train movement, this particular timepiece features a three train fusée movement with an anchor escapement and pendulum bob. Eight nested bells chime on the quarter hour and strike on a coiled gong. The clock indicates the time on a beautiful silvered dial with Roman numerals. Adding to the elegance and rarity of this skeleton clock is its ebonized and gold gilt base and glass cover that simultaneously provides protection while allowing for an unobstructed view of the timepiece. Skeleton clocks can be safely divided into two main categories based on rarity. First is how many trains, or winding mechanisms, they possess. Most of the known examples have a single train and a lesser amount were made with two trains. The rarest of all, such as the present timepiece, are those featuring three trains. This is because it is exceptionally difficult to make three winding mechanisms while maintaining the complex beauty of the skeleton clock. The second category of skeleton clocks can be separated by how many bells or chimes they possess. The overwhelming majority have no chimes and a handful of the known examples have a large spiral single chime. The rarest have eight bells. This exceptional clock possesses both a large spiral gong and eight bells. Evan's Westminster Abbey skeleton clock is featured and discussed in Derek Robert's Skeleton Clocks: Britain 1800 to 1914 on pages 64-69, circa 1860 Measures: 19 5/8" wide x 11" deep x 30 3/8" high.
