About the Item
A desk clock with blue enamel designed by Aaron Lufkin Dennison.
This is an exceptional desk clock, made in Birmingham England during the art deco period, back in the 1929. The craftsmanship of this beautiful desk clock is exceptional and was designed by the Aaron Lufkin Dennison / Dennison Watch Case Co. with geometric patterns. The case is round and was crafted in solid sterling silver .925/.999 and mounted in a fluted round pedestal. All sides are embellished with a fabulous engine turned Guilloché design, which is topped with applications of vivid blue glass enamel.
Dial: The dial is round, silvered with engine turned, analog with Arabic black numbers and blued steel Breguet hands, signed Swiss Made.
Movement: Swiss, Mechanical 8 days, manual winding with integral key wound from the back.
Weight: 195.4 Grams, (125,26 Dwt).
Measurements: 87 mm by 89 mm by 70 mm (3.45 x 3.5 x 2.75 Inches).
Hallmarks: The case is stamped with British marks, the anchor mark for the city of Birmingham, the maker's mark ALD associated to Aaron Lufkin Dennison, and the gothic letter E for the production-assay date of 1929.
Aaron Lufkin Dennison
He was an American Watchmaker. A pioneer in industrial watch manufacturing, an inventor, and the founder of several companies. Aaron L. Dennison, was born in Freeport, Maine, he was the son of Andrew Dennison, a boot and shoemaker, who was also a music teacher. From an early age, Aaron was interested in mass production, and from the age of 18 to about 27 he was an apprentice in various divisions of jewelry and watch repair, and manufacturing. One of the first companies he created, was a company that made paper boxes for jewelry, under the supervision of his younger brother, Eliphalet Dennison, became the Dennison Manufacturing Company. It operated under that name from until 1990 when it merged with Avery International Corporation and became Avery Dennison. One of the last businesses he started in 1862, was located in Birmingham England. It was very successful and continued in operation until 1967, under various names including Dennison, Wigley
Company, named to include his partner Alfred Wigley, who joined him in 1879. Franklin Dennison, Aaron's son, became a partner in the firm after his father died. The company was renamed, The Dennison Watch Case Company, 10 years after Aaron's death. It was in operation until 1967.
Guilloché
This technique is used in fine jewelry to enhance the appearance of brooches, rings and pendants. Guilloché enamel refers to metal pieces that have been given the Guilloché treatment and then covered with a translucent layer of enamel, giving the geometric patterns underneath the enamel a colorful hue.
Note: The case and the clock movement has been professionally cleaned and serviced. The clock is in excellent working condition. The silver has not been heavy polished to preserve the patina, in original excellent antique condition.
Condition: The overall condition of this clock is very good. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the silver. The enamel is in great condition with one little restoration. This piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.
