About the Item
This exquisite Louis XVI table clock showcases the neoclassical elegance of its time, crafted by renowned clockmaker Antoine Crosnier in Paris around 1780. The clock features a striking urn shape adorned with mask handles, embodying the refined artistry of the era.
The hour and minute rings are beautifully inset with enamel numerals, signed "Crosnier, Paris," while the time is indicated by a serpent, adding a unique touch to the design. The plinth base houses the movement, complete with anchor escapement, adjustable silk suspension, and a star-cut outside count wheel that strikes on a bell (bell lacking).
The front and sides of the plinth are inset with exquisite Sèvres porcelain plaques, decorated 'en grisaille' to depict allegories of astronomy, enriching the clock’s narrative. The rear door is elegantly pierced and engraved with foliate scrolls, demonstrating the meticulous craftsmanship of the piece. The entire case is finely cast and chased, highlighting the attention to detail characteristic of the period.
This remarkable timepiece is not only a functional object but also a stunning work of art, perfect for collectors and enthusiasts of neoclassical design.
