This beautiful, fully restored Museum Wall Clock is a striking example of mid-century modern minimalism at its finest. Designed by the visionary Nathan George Horwitt and produced by the Howard Miller Clock Company in the early 1970s, this clock is more than a timekeeper—it’s an icon. With its bold black face punctuated only by a single white dot at the twelve o’clock position, Horwitt’s creation references ancient sundials and the simplicity of celestial time. The design is both poetic and precise, embodying the purity of form that modernist designers championed. In 1970, this model was officially accepted into the permanent design collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, affirming its place in the canon of American design.
This particular clock has been thoughtfully restored to VERY VERY GOOD condition. The steel case has been refinished in an eggshell enamel, and the clean, circular face is protected by a newly polished glass cover. The original mechanical movement has been replaced with a modern quartz battery movement, offering the best of both worlds: timeless style and reliable, contemporary function. It runs on a single AA battery.
Measuring approximately 12.75 inches in diameter and just over two inches in depth, the piece makes an understated but impactful presence on the wall. The monochrome design features sleek white hands that sweep silently across the black void, interrupted only by the signature white dot—Horwitt’s minimalist nod to time’s cyclical nature. There are no numerals, no decorative flourishes. Just space, motion, and meaning.
Howard Miller, the Michigan-based manufacturer behind this clock, was a leading producer of high-quality modern clocks during the postwar era. Their collaboration with Horwitt was brief but historic. Horwitt's estate would later reach a licensing agreement with Movado to produce his "Museum Watch," which took this same visual language and translated it into wearable art.
