About the Item

Ingenious, Memphis Era, Postmodern "Magic Cube" with hidden compartments filled with desk/office supplies. Designed by renowned Japanese-American, modernist architect, George Matsumoto, in the 1980s. This amazing. geometric design is a marvel of Form, Function and Mystery.. What appears, visually, to be a desktop, modern sculpture, contains hidden compartments on every side. Each compartment cleverly holds miniature, usable, desk supplies housed within a streamlined cube. These colorful geometric sections (compartments) are either removable or have doors that slide or flip open. The cube, made of hard plastic, designed in Japan, was patented in the UK in the 1980s. It was produced in limited supply, in Hong Kong. The cube contains; 1. Adhesive mini-tape (orange block) 2. Scissors (red squares) 3. Digital mini clock (blue block) 4. Mini cutter (green block) 5. Mini stapler (yellow block) 6. Mini pen (blue and red block) 7. Magnet section for paper clips with two paper clips on the bottom 8. Mini tape measure Measures 3" x 3" x 3' This modern design was featured in an expo by MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art, in NYC but not sold there. The "Magic Cube", is a relatively rare Postmodern, Memphis-era art design. Extraordinary, brilliant collectible

Located in St.Petersburg, FL
An unusual cast aluminum sculpture by Anne Van Kleeck (1922-1998). A bulging cube, patinated and polished top, that can be a pedestal or side table, unsigned, numbered 2. From the artist's estate. A note about the artist: Anne Van Kleeck was primarily known for her works in cast bronze and ceramics. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University (B.A.) and Ohio State University (M.A.) and spent several years as a professor of art in Ohio and Florida. In 1957, Anne traveled to Venice, Italy to study bronze and lost wax casting, beaten iron and mosaic techniques. During that stay she employed an Italian foundry expert and together they established a small foundry on the island of Murano where they cast bronzes for her one woman show in Venice. Van Kleecks work has won multiple awards and is owned worldwide by private collectors and museums, including the Metropolitan Museum and MOMA in New York. She was contemporaries of and exhibited with Ruth Asawa, Gary Knox Bennett...
