About the Item

This rare and decorative pen tray, designed by Gio Ponti for Ceramiche Joo in Milano in 1956, is a remarkable piece of design history with a unique connection to one of Ponti’s architectural masterpieces. Ponti, who designed the iconic *De Bijenkorf* building in Eindhoven in 1969, incorporated ceramic tiles produced by Ceramiche Joo into the building’s exterior. These tiles became an integral part of the building’s visual identity, making them a hallmark of Ponti’s distinctive style. To celebrate the building’s grand opening on March 18, 1969, a select few pen trays were crafted using one of the ceramic tiles set into a brass casing. These exclusive trays were gifted only to employees and VIP clients as a token of appreciation, making them exceedingly rare collector’s items. The green ceramic glaze, with its bold and vibrant tone, exemplifies Ponti’s design sensibilities and adds a touch of elegance to this functional object. This particular piece is in excellent original condition and remains in its *original box* with the accompanying paper leaflet, an extraordinary and highly collectible addition. The brass casing is stamped with the date “Eindhoven 18 maart 1969” and features the *De Bijenkorf* logo, further anchoring its historical and design significance. Hard to find as a complete set, this pen tray is not only a practical accessory but also a cherished memento of Gio Ponti’s architectural and design legacy. It represents a rare opportunity to own a piece that connects the worlds of art, architecture, and craftsmanship in a truly unique way.
