About the Item

An outstanding testament to 19th-century craftsmanship, this exceptional Napoleon III Gutta Percha pen holder was masterfully designed at the end of the 19th Century. The piece was meticulously crafted in France circa 1880. A true antique collector's gem, the piece showcases intricate molded motifs on each side—each design distinct and richly detailed. The antique desk accessory is exquisitely crafted with distinctive designs on each side and delicate ornamentation throughout. The deep ebony hue enhances its allure, while the delicate ornamentation speaks to the refined artistry of the period. Though not signed, the quality and elegance of the work hint unmistakably at a skilled artisan's touch, making it a precious and rare addition to any distinguished private collection. Dimensions: 12.19 in wide (31 cm) by 3.94 in deep (10 cm) by 1.75 in high (4.5 cm). Historical Heritage: Long before gutta-percha was introduced into the Western world, it was used in a less-processed form by the natives of the Malaysian archipelago for making knife handles, walking sticks, and other purposes. The first European to study this material was John Tradescant, who collected it in the Far East in 1656. He named this material "Mazer wood". William Montgomerie, a medical officer in imperial service, introduced gutta-percha into practical use in the West. He was the first to appreciate the potential of this material in medicine, and he was awarded the Royal Society of Arts' gold medal in London in 1843.
