About the Item
Designed, no doubt, in 1947 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first United States postage stamp, this lovely porcelain letter rack made by the famed Rookwood pottery is bathed in a deep, sky blue glaze and features an image of that first stamp in relief. This example was made in 1956, so clearly the rack was in demand for several years. Rookwood was the largest and most successful art pottery in America for several decades, producing artistic wares from the late 19th century into the 1950s. Best known for its Arts and Crafts pieces in the early 20th century, the company also produced fine Art Deco ware into the 1940s. The rack is fully marked and dated.
