About the Item

Art deco figure designed by Walter Von Nessen for Chase Usa Co. This is a beautiful Streamline decorative desk figure created during the Art Deco period by Walter Von Nessen for the Chase USA Co., back in the 1930. This stylized desk figure has been designed in the shape of a geometric toy-soldier in solid gilt brass and decorated with applications of black and red lacquer. Carefully made up with streamline patterns and solid construction. Surely will be a very decorative piece and a great conversation item. Walter Von Nessen He was born in Berlin, Germany. In 1925 he immigrated to the United States and opened Nessen Studios in New York City. At first he designed lighting and furniture for architects to use in their residential and public commissions. With the help of one craftsman he produced an amazing variety lighting fixture, each showcasing innovative approaches and solutions to the requirements of the job. His furniture and lighting work appeared in many of the seminal exhibitions of the late 1920’s and 1930’s. In 1929 he had a chair exhibited at The Metropolitan, New York and Newark, New Jersey Museum’s exhibition of tubular metal furniture. In 1930 he exhibited at the Third International Exhibition of Contemporary Industrial Design and in 1932 he was represented at the Design and Industry Exhibition. In 1937 he won a gold medal for his lighting exhibit at the Paris Exhibition. In 1935 his exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition of contemporary art cemented his position among the leaders of American commercial design. Beginning in 1931 Von Nessen designed over 60 bowls, trays, bookends, shavers, pitchers, and a variety of other household products for The Chase Copper and Brass Company, Waterbury, Connecticut. Also, beginning in 1931 he designed lighting fixtures for The Efcolite Corporation, Trenton, New Jersey. Walter Von Nessen died in 1943. Weight: About 1.5 Pounds, (0.68 Kg.). Desk table lighter designed by Samuel E. Ghinn. This is a superb and very rare table desk semi automatic petrol lighter, created in Cincinnati Ohio by Samuel E. Ghinn, back in 1923. This lighter was manufactured at the S.E. Guinn Mfg. Co. with geometric patterns in solid polished brass. The ignition mechanism is semiautomatic, with a very unusual and complicate system. Guinn is best known for his distinctive automatic table and desktop Bell Lighters, Samuel Guinn was an important early American designer and manufacturer. Guinn's first lighter design was patented in 1917, an automatic ferrocerium sparking attachment for gas kitchen stoves. His first full automatic petrol lighter design was patented in 1923, more than three years before the more famous Ronson "one motion" design. Guinn patented several variations of his original lighter design during the mid 1920, reflecting both mechanical improvements and different design variations targeted for home and commercial use. Lighter production continued until the early 1930s when the company went bankrupt, Guinn passed away in 1935. This piece is very gorgeous with an outstanding look and great eye appeal.
