Inkwell with Bronze Mount and Marble Base Origin: France Material: Gilt and patinated bronze, green marble Date: Second Empire, circa 1860–1880 Dimensions: H × W × D: 10 × 13 × 16 cm Description: This elegant inkwell stands on a rectangular base made of dark green marble with white veining. The central cylindrical inkwell is set in a finely cast bronze mount. Its walls are richly adorned with floral and geometric relief decorations, highlighted by a dark patina. The hinged lid, crowned by a finial in the shape of a fruit cluster, is fire-gilt and features a continuous frieze of palmettes. The marble slab includes a broad pen rest and stands on four compressed spherical feet. Further Information: Inkwells of this type reflect the decorative culture of the French Second Empire. The characteristic contrast between patinated and fire-gilt bronze, combined with a massive and finely crafted marble base, unites functionality with a strong sense of visual presence. Condition: Very good condition. No chips or cracks in the marble. No glass insert present. The bronze shows minimal signs of wear; the gilding is largely preserved.
