This highly elegant inkwell stand was crafted circa 1920, during the peak of the popular Art Deco movement, with French makers leading the style at the time. Emerging in the 1920s and 1930s, Art Deco is characterised by bold geometric shapes, symmetry, and lavish ornamentation. It often features sleek lines, metallic finishes, and vibrant colours, reflecting a fascination with modernity, luxury, and technological progress. The style influenced architecture, fashion, furniture, and decorative arts, leaving a lasting mark on early 20th century design, and its aesthetics continue to inspire revivals in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The inkwell is crafted almost entirely from vibrant, veined green onyx, featuring natural cream and orange veining that adds visual interest to the piece. The rectangular base has three carved ridges designed to hold pens, protected underneath by a metal sheet. Adjacent to these is a small decorative container for holding ink, into which quills or pens could be dipped. The body of the inkwell is lavishly adorned with polychrome champlevé enamel designs set within gilt metal, while the hinged lid is round for comfort and carved from onyx, complementing the overall design.
Crafted during the height of the Art Deco movement, this sophisticated and finely made inkwell stand is a superb addition to any office or collection.

A stunning and rare French mid-19th century encier in Louis Revival taste with Moorish Arabesque influence. Handcrafted in Champlevé enameled gilt bronze with ornate and colorful blue, pink, red, green and white enameling over the heavily shaped and scalloped base, that borders the stunning Severes style (I have not removed it to check for a makers mark) enameled porcelain tray scene of frolicking putti. The stunning enameling continues on the raised inkwell body and hinged lid with finial. Opposite, two raised balls act as a pen rest, the inkstand raising on four ball feet.
