This elegant inkstand with an inkwell was crafted around 1900, during the peak of the Art Nouveau period. Originating in France, the style was characterised by sinuous lines, natural motifs, and a sense of playfulness. Emerging in the late 19th century, Art Nouveau aimed to create a new, modern art that broke away from historical imitation and reflected the spirit of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Using gilt bronze, also known as ormolu, the makers of this antique beautifully showcased the iconic characteristics of the style. The tray, designed to hold pens or other writing instruments, is cast with a charming animal scene depicting a hen attending to her group of chicks as they wander through wheat sheaves. Surrounding this family scene are round panels filled with fruits, vegetables, and foliage, further emphasizing the importance and beauty of nature during this time. The two shorter sides feature shaped handles that aid in transporting the piece.
At the top centre stands an ornate inkwell with a hinged lid. Its gadrooned, urn-shaped body is further accented with scrollwork, while the lid is topped with a flower finial for ease of opening.
Showcasing the skill of European artisans and the enduring appeal of the Art Nouveau style, this antique is a desirable addition to any collection and can either act as a decorative object or as a functional desk accessory.
