About the Item

An Exquisite Example of an Early Rosewood Travelling Writing Slope of fairly large proportions of Continental origin, possibly French. Circa first half of the Nineteenth Century probably French Regency period. The entire main area with lavish brass inlay on well figured Rosewood opening to reveal an original fitted interior. Complete with its original twin handle carry brass handles Condition: This Slope has been carefully restored including light polishing. The original embossed velvet writing area is of used condition, however we feel it not necessary to replace as it shows wonderful character left as is. Lock and key are present and working, very slight evidence of shrinkage where top lift panels meet. All brass inlay is present. Both ink bottles are original. Width: 16" (40.5cm). An exceptionally fine quality example of a Lady’s or Gentleman’s English Regency Period polished brass mounted well figured Rosewood inlaid Boulle Style Jewellery or Sewing Casket or Table Box made during the first quarter of the Nineteenth Century, of English origin. Raised on its original bun feet, the quality of this item is firmly attributed to furniture makers Gillows of Lancaster. The rectangular form with hinged lid opening to reveal its original yellow silk lined interior, complete with lift out sectional tray. This exquisite casket is raised on four generous beaded bun supports. Condition: Good condition with nice patination, no losses to brass inlays. Lock is present and working, lacking key. Some losses to edgings of lift-out tray, overall a wonderful item in good condition. Height: (entire closed) 5.5" (14cm). Width: (at front) 10” (25.5cm). Depth: 7.25” (18.5cm).
