About the Item

Antique French Sèvres Style Rococo Painted Gilt Pink Gold Inkstand French Porcelain 19th Century Dimensions: H x W x D: 8.5cm x 12cm x 8cm This charming decorative inkstand dates from 19th century France and is richly adorned in the style of Sèvres, the renowned French porcelain manufacturer. While most of its surface remains white with ornate Rococo style gilt decoration, the upper section is painted in pink, an important colour in Sèvres’ history. The Rose Pompadour shade, as this pink is called, originated in the 18th century and was named after Madame de Pompadour, the influential mistress of King Louis XV. This iconic soft pink glaze became a symbol of French royal luxury and artistic innovation. The top of the inkstand features two removable pots. One has a perforated top, indicating it is a pounce shaker. Pounce powder, finely ground cuttlefish bone, chalk, or pumice, was essential for writing. It was used to prepare paper by making it less absorbent for quill pens and to dry wet ink quickly, thereby preventing smudging. The pot on the right is for ink. A more unusual feature of this piece is the long compartment at the front, designed to hold dip or quill pens, which were typically laid at an angle with only the nib and lower shaft resting in the pen rest. Embodying the rich and enduring tradition of letter writing, this exquisite antique is a superb collector’s item or a distinctive gift for a modern office celebrating the elegance of the past.
