About the Item

Exceptional inkwell with pen tray made of BACCARAT crystal. The rectangular pen tray has a cube-shaped inkwell holder in the center, closed with a gilded brass hinge. There is a relief mark BACCARAT DEPOSE on the inside. Baccarat is a French city in the region Grand Est (until 2015 "Lorraine", or in german "Lothringen"). The word baccarat is synonymous with excellence throughout the world, especially the art of crystal artisans in the former Lorraine. The emergence of the glass industry in Baccarat is due to the efforts of the Bishop of Metz, LOUIS DE MONTMORENCY-Laval, to counteract the commercial invasion of Bohemian products and to take advantage of the wood that was abundant in the region. In 1764 he received from King Louis XV. permission to set up the first glass manufacture in Baccarat. After a series of good times interrupted by stagnation, a new upswing began. A new beginning was made under GABRIEL-AIMÉ D'ARTIGUES, who turned Baccarat into a crystal glass factory. From then on, Baccarat specialized in crystal glass and became the market leader in France under the direction of PIERRE-ANTOINE GODARD. Baccarat's stated motto was "perfection" and to achieve this the crystal factory hired the best glassmakers, blowers, cutters and designers. In this regard, Baccarat holds the French record for the number of "the best workers in France". The gold medals awarded to Baccarat at each world exhibition are a testament to the quality and skill of the artists. The high level of quality and creativity of its productions give it a reputation and an image of excellence in taste and art "à la française". The Baccarat crystal inkwells were very often limited edition works, made only of crystal glass or sometimes in combination with silver or bronze. Similar inkwells can be found in the specialized literature: "Encriers Ecritoires - Francois Podevin-Bauduin", p. 152.
