About the Item

Antique Victorian Miniature Travelling Inkwell Brown Wood Metal Glass Writing Continental Wood, metal, glass Late 19th Century Dimensions: H x D: 4.5cm x 4cm This miniature antique inkwell is crafted from several high-quality materials and reflects the 19th century fashion for objects of this type. During the 19th century, miniature travelling inkwells were essential accessories for writers, merchants, and officials who needed to write while on the move. They typically featured tightly sealed closures and glass inserts protected by metal or wooden cases and were sometimes sold as Victorian keepsakes. Their practical role declined with the introduction of fountain pens and typewriters. The round, barrel-shaped body of this example is made from turned wood, accented with delicate metal bands. Thicker metal bands curve over the top and bottom edges, completing the design while providing protection to areas most exposed to wear. A circular push button opens the inkwell to reveal a glass ink container set neatly inside. The combination of wood and metal creates an elegant and functional design, carefully engineered to offer both durability and ease of use for travellers. Although letter writing is no longer as common as it was in the 19th century, miniature inkwells remain highly collectible today, valued for designs ranging from purely utilitarian to whimsical souvenir forms.
