About the Item

The Inkwell of square shape made from glass with hand cut diamond quilt pattern to the exterior. The lid of the inkwell mounted with a Sterling Silver hinged lid is hallmarked to the side John Grinsell Sons, Birmingham and is dated 1912. Within the lid is a compartment to hold a pocket watch when the inkwell is in use the lid flips up for timekeeping and houses a nice sized pocket watch. The pocket watch, also made with a silver case is beautifully engraved with a floral design. The dial has a white enamel face with black Roman numerals, a subsidiary dial and is finished with gold enamel dots around the circumference. The rear inner lid is stamped 935 (continental silver most likely of Swiss origin) and bears an inscription reading ‘Remembrance of Arthur 1904’ showing that the pocket watch was given to a family member in remembrance. The pocket watch was most likely added to the inkwell when the owner purchased the inkwell.
