About the Item

Fine First Empire-era French inkwell in the shape of a ship, early 19th century. The inkwell depicts two dolphins with twisted tails holding a shell, inside which are concealed the two inkwell bowls closed by finely chiseled lids. The ensemble rests on a marble base aleppo breccia. This inkwell is one of those prestige objects produced in the Empire era to decorate luxurious rooms: they adorned the desks of personages and were made, depending on social level, from the finest materials. The base made of Aleppo breccia, a valuable and extremely expensive marble, and the excellent quality of the gilding and chiseling confirm that it came from very high up the social ladder. Excellent condition, original mercury gilding. Measurements L max cm 16 D max cm 8 H cm 13
