About the Item
A richly detailed French Empire bronze and brass inkwell conceived in the archeological revival manner, after the form of ancient Roman oil lamps. The central reservoir, cast with a hammered surface and gadrooned lower register, features applied lion-mask handles with suspended rings and acanthus scroll terminals that evolve into coiled serpent arms. These serpentine forms sweep outward to support twin circular wells resting on stylized dolphin supports, recalling Roman marine motifs adapted for neoclassical interiors. The ensemble is raised on a shaped ebonized wood base with a tripartite outline and rests upon gilt-bronze dolphin-fin feet.
The design’s sculptural vocabulary—lion mascarons, entwined dolphins, and scaled serpents—derives from the antique lamps and candelabra of Pompeii and Herculaneum, whose rediscovery profoundly influenced early nineteenth-century French bronziers. The crisp casting and restrained patination suggest a Parisian atelier active during the Restoration period, working in the manner of Claude Galle or Thomire, where mythological and marine ornamentation was reinterpreted through the lens of Empire grandeur.
