Inkwell with Butterfly Finial Origin: Probably France Material: Gilded metal with floral engraving and enamel decoration Date: Circa 1870–1890 Dimensions: H × D: 11 x 15 cm Description: This highly decorative inkwell features a low, rounded form with a broad, scalloped tray and a domed lid. The finial takes the shape of a delicately modeled butterfly, serving as both a functional and ornamental element. The entire surface—tray, body, and lid—is richly gilded and adorned with red enamel accents and fine floral engravings in black. The interplay of metallic sheen, ornamental engraving, and vivid colour creates a striking visual presence. Additional Information: Elaborately decorated inkwells of this type were especially popular in France during the second half of the 19th century. The piece combines precise metal engraving with hand-applied enamel and symbolic ornamentation. The butterfly finial reflects the era's fascination with natural forms and ephemeral beauty. The dark floral drawings on the golden tray are executed in Schwarzlot (black enamel), a traditional painting technique using iron oxide-based pigment fired onto the surface. Condition: Very good overall condition. Minimal signs of age to the gilding; the enamel decoration is completely preserved. No glass liner present.

A stunning and rare French mid-19th century encier in Louis Revival taste with Moorish Arabesque influence.
