About the Item

Chinese Porcelain Desk Vessel with Gilt Bronze Mount Origin: China, made for the European export market Material: Porcelain, overglaze decoration, glass liner, gilt bronze Date: Late 19th century Dimensions: H × D: 10 × 10 cm Description: Cylindrical porcelain vessel decorated with finely painted overglaze enamels in the famille rose palette. The body features stylised peony blossoms and foliate scrolls against a dark blue ground. The precisely fitted gilt bronze mount is finely chased and arranged with six peripheral apertures and a central hinged lid. Beneath this lid lies a removable glass liner, likely intended to hold ink, while the surrounding openings were designed to hold writing implements such as dip pens or brushes – indicating the object’s function as a desk utensil. Remarks: Such writing vessels are typical of the late 19th-century Chinoiserie revival. The porcelain was produced in Jingdezhen for export and subsequently mounted in Europe, most likely in France or England. The red stamped mark on the base refers to a workshop production, without indicating official imperial manufacture. Condition: Excellent condition. Minor signs of wear to the metal mount. Glass liner intact. The painted decoration is vivid and complete, with no chips or restorations.
