About the Item
Capital-shaped white marble inkwell, souvenir of the Grand Tour, Roman workshop, late 18th century.
Rome was considered the stop par excellence of the Grand Tour, as it represented at the same time a privileged access to the historical heritage of previous centuries and the wonders of the Baroque era . The artists' works, particularly views of Rome and archaeological sites, helped form and spread the imagery of the Grand Tour, creating a "myth" of European antiquities and Italy as a cultural destination.
During the trip, the young people could purchase, according to their means and possibilities, numerous works of art and antiques and visit the ruins of Rome as well as Pompeii and Herculaneum that had recently been rediscovered. This gave rise to the fashion of making "souvenirs," copies of the masterpieces in museums and archaeological sites, reworked as everyday objects such as caskets, inkwells, etc.
