About the Item
A stylish antique German majolica glazed ceramic inkwell and desk stand by Mühlen
Leendertz Issum dating from around 1880. The porcelain desk stand is of square shape standing raised on four shallow integral corner feet. The stand has a raised lower edge each molded in relief with a stylized mask and scroll patterning with beaded designs around the top edges. Corner cut outs provide the facility to rest quill pens. A central raised square tower contains the inkwell reserve. The sides are molded in deep relief with central lion masks set against a patterned ground with corner columns. A flat overlapping platform decorated in low relief with floral and chain patterning has a centrally mounted and raised round hinged brass inkwell mounted with a raised round cover molded with a lion head. The desk stand is decorated in an olive-green majolica style glazes and has printed Mühlen
Leendertz Issum marks.
Provenance: acquired in the UK Art Market.
In good presentable condition with a few minor glaze chips and missing its inkwell liner.
