About the Item
Art Nouveau Inkstand with Leaf-shaped Lids
Origin: Germany
Material: Copper with porcelain inkwells
Date: Circa 1900
Description:
Rectangular copper inkstand with gently curved sides and stylized cut-out handles, typical of the Art Nouveau period. The two inkwells are surmounted by lids shaped like stylised leaves, which are hinged and open upward. Inside each is a removable porcelain liner, used to hold the ink. The overall design is streamlined and functional, with decorative elements reduced to organic stylisation. The surface of the copper shows a warm patina consistent with age.
Wissenswertes:
The inside of the lid is stamped with the following marks:
„O.E.P. 10385“ – likely a design or patent number, assigned to the manufacturer or designer;
„D.R.G.M. 168818“ – this abbreviation stands for Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster, a form of intellectual property protection in Imperial Germany. The number indicates a registered utility model, filed in the German registry. Based on the numbering, this particular model was registered around 1901–1902. D.R.G.M. protections were typically valid for a period of up to six years and were used to protect practical innovations and designs.
Condition:
Good original condition with minor signs of use and age. The copper has developed a uniform, authentic patina. Both porcelain inkwells are intact and removable. The hinges function well.
