About the Item
Set of three antique Black Forest hand carved walnut wood hinged ink wells with glass insert eyes.
Made during the mid-late 1800s, in the Brienz area of Switzerland.
I have seen a lot of Black Forest or Schwarzwald carved dogs and bears, but a kingfisher and a monkey I never saw before.
The Bulldog and and the monkey have their original inkwell, a lead and a ceramic one. The inkwell of the kingfisher was replaced, probably somewhere in the 1950s, with a perfect fitting plastic one
All three have beautiful carving all-over their surface and over time it has taken on a deep golden brown patine.
