About the Item
Victorian English Brass Figural Pig Inkwell with Articulated Back Lids, c. 1875
Consists of four pieces, The figural pig, glass inkwell with domed brass cap, A small porcelain cup for pounce or sponge, A brass nib or seal reservoir with screw top
A rare and wonderfully humorous Victorian brass figural inkwell modeled as a stout English farm pig, complete with two independently hinged “saddleback” lids that open to reveal a fitted writing service. Dating to circa 1875, the piece is cast in heavy brass and richly hand-chased, the surface engraved with textured fur strokes and naturalistic anatomical modeling. The pig’s broad back and raised ridge recall the English Saddleback and Large Black breeds familiar throughout rural 19th-century Britain—an instantly recognizable motif to Victorian audiences and a favored subject in whimsical desk objects of the period.
Inside, the articulated lids reveal a fully equipped writing ensemble:
• A glass inkwell with domed brass cap
• A small porcelain cup for pounce or sponge
• A brass nib or seal reservoir with screw top
This multifunction interior is entirely consistent with high-quality English novelty inkwells of the late 19th century, designed to delight as much as they served practical writing purposes. The underside retains its original casting marks and warm, untouched patina.
These figural brass inkwells—particularly pigs—symbolized good fortune, prosperity, and rural abundance, making them sought-after desk companions. Today they are collected for their humor, craftsmanship, and mechanical ingenuity.
