About the Item
A beautiful antique French bronze letter opener by the sculptor Maurice Frécourt. Circa 1900.
It is signed "Frécourt". This piece is in good condition with signs of age and use.
Dimensions: The letter opener is 6.38 inches long and approximately 0.63 inches high.
Provenance: Found at an estate sale in Strasbourg, Alsace, France
This fabulous collector's item, signed by the French sculptor Maurice Frécourt (1890–1961), was a significant Art Deco artist who specialized in animal sculptures. Born in Charenton in 1890, he studied under Charles Valton, Antonin Mercié, and Jean Boucher at the École des Beaux-Arts. He gained recognition through exhibitions of his work at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris starting in 1920. His sculptures often included office accessories and desk decorations. His work has been compared to that of Louis Carvin and Max Le Verrier.
