About the Item

A brass letter knife or bookmark, made by George Unite, Birmingham, England, date marked 1902. The head of William Shakespeare, the English playwright, poet, and actor is cast in the round at the terminal of the knife. Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon” The knife is hand engraved, “Stratford-on-Avon” in script, along the length of the split blade. The split in the blade allows the knife to be used as a place keeper for a book as shown. Beautifully cast and fully marked: The Anchor for the city Birmingham, The Lion for England, and the C for the year 1902. The mark GU for George Unite was registered in 1832. 4.5 inches Long x .75 inches at the widest point. In very good condition showing unpolished patina.
