Vintage German Steel Dice Paperweight (Art Deco Style, c. Mid-20th Century) A striking minimalist sculpture and paperweight, this German steel cube features a single dice form balanced elegantly on one corner, mounted to a bevel-edged base. Its geometric clarity and strong industrial lines evoke the Art Deco aesthetic of the 1930s, reminiscent of the metalwork designs of Edgar Brandt, a pioneer in modernist iron art. Made from solid steel, the dice displays the numbers 6, 3, and 5 on its upper faces, each marked with sunken concave pips, while the numbers 1, 2, and 4 remain hidden beneath. The pips are meticulously machined rather than stamped, and the base is screwed from underneath and permanently fixed, preventing rotation—showcasing the object as a deliberate compositional sculpture rather than a toy. Far from being mass-produced, pieces like this were traditionally created by apprentice machinists to demonstrate their mastery of precision milling, drilling, layout calculation, and professional finishing techniques. Their purpose was both practical and artistic: a test of skill that also became a personal desk ornament.
