About the Item

A very early and exceptionally rare signed original blue stained Rene Lalique 'Papillon Ailes Ouverte' (Butterfly with wings open) cachet, dating from 1919. (Ref: Marcilhac 192) Cachets were made so you could have your initials cut into the base and then use it to mark red wax seals for correspondence (fortunately no initials have been used on this piece). This early example has its original blue staining (a non permanent form of enamelling use by Rene Lalique on his best pieces). This is the only example of this Rare Lalique piece we've ever seen outside of a Museum Rene Lalique was possibly the most famous of all glass makers -the most collectable pieces by him are those produced during his lifetime (ie pre 1945), Most are signed R Lalique. Some early pieces circa 1914-1920 like this one were signed just Lalique (this example is with an ornate 'L') -this is documented in the Lalique 'Bible' by Felix Marcilhac -faintly visible in picture 5.
