About the Item
A good large antique Victorian green glass doorstop or dump weight including a pot/vase with four flowering stems probably made in Yorkshire, England and dating from around 1870.
Although many of these types of weights were made as ‘end of day’ items using up molten glass however the addition of metallic powders, the reaction with which allowed makers to create inclusions within the glass body would have taken both skill and time. This has also given rise to considerable variation in quality between the dump weights produced.
This example is one of the better examples and believe was probably made intentionally using the metal powders to form a well-structured vase containing a large floral stem and three smaller ones. The largest flower with multiple petals and each flower with a well-controlled large air bubble center. The weight is of tall, rounded shape with a flat finished base with a rough central pontil mark. The weight is not marked.
