Crafted around 1900, this elegant photo frame exemplifies the Rococo style. Emerging in early 18th century France, Rococo design is renowned for its playful elegance and ornate detail. It emphasizes lightness, asymmetry, and decorative motifs such as shells, scrolls, and flowers. Often associated with aristocratic leisure and intimacy, Rococo decorative arts sought to create an atmosphere of charm, movement, and refined sensuality rather than grandeur.
These characteristics are beautifully showcased in this antique frame. Cast from gilt brass, it features a shaped rocaille band centered with intricate scrollwork. Adorning the frame are clusters of flowers that highlight the delicate and enchanting Rococo aesthetic. Two symmetrical putti flank the glass panel, their bodies draped in foliate garlands and their gazes directed toward the photograph displayed within. The maker cleverly utilised C-scrolls, hallmarks of the Rococo style, as the front legs supporting the piece.
The reverse includes three rods topped with clover-shaped finials, with a foldable leg extending from the central one. These elements provide both stability and visual appeal. Within the frame rests a vintage wedding photograph, offering a charming glimpse into life from decades past.
