About the Item

The "Cries of London" series, including this "Sweet Orange" plate, originated from a series of oil paintings by Francis Wheatley exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1792 and 1795. These paintings were subsequently engraved and sold as prints. Reproductions of these popular prints, like the plate that we have listed here were produced over a long period, even into the 20th century. It is noted that Adams China, of Tunstall, England produced these Cries of England plates from the 1920s until the mid-20th century. The plates with the decorative brass plate are unique from the 1940s. Dimensions: Plate: 3.25"D Brass frame: 8.25"D Please note that due to the age and origin of this plate, there is some pitting on the brass. The actual painting on the China is in perfect condition with no wear to the painting, neither on the front nor on the back.
