About the Item

Glass Sculpture blown sound, design Alfredo BARBINI. ORIGIN Murano PERIOD 1970s DESIGNER Alfredo BARBINI (Murano, 1912 - 2007) was one of the leading figures in twentieth-century Murano glass. Born into a family of glassmakers, he entered the furnace at a very young age and quickly developed exceptional control of the material. Between the 1940s and 1950s, working first for Seguso and then in his own glassworks, he developed a personal style: compact masses of submerged glass, zoomorphic and abstract forms crossed by an internal light that defines a kind of glassy sculpture. Its contribution is twofold. On the one hand, he renews the Murano tradition without breaking it, bending classical techniques to a modern sensibility; on the other, he gives the objects an almost narrative character, transforming fish, birds, and stylized figures into crystallized micro-stories. It is this synthesis of artisan hand and plastic vocation that makes Barbini a central figure in the transition of glass from a decorative artifact to a true artistic medium in the 20th century.
