About the Item
A masterful sculptural work blending architectural rigor with telluric expression.
This exceptional grogged stoneware (grès chamotté) sculpture is an original work by the artist Jo Rowland, dating from the 1970s. A true totem of the Brutalist era, this unique piece captivates with its complex vertical structure, evoking both crumbling futuristic skyscrapers and ancient natural rock formations.
The work is distinguished by its remarkable play on texture and relief. The use of high-fired grogged stoneware provides a powerful grain and a tactile surface, punctuated by lighter mineral inclusions that create a striking contrast with the iron-rich clay.
Sacred Geometry: Geometric motifs (squares and diamonds) are stamped into the mass, reminiscent of ancient glyphs or industrial design elements.
Verticality: The composition plays with asymmetrical heights, creating a dynamic visual experience from every angle.
Signature: The piece features the artist’s signature stamped at the base, guaranteeing its authenticity.
The sculpture is presented in excellent vintage condition, with a natural patina that enhances the depth of its reliefs. Its commanding presence (40 cm in height) makes it an ideal centerpiece for a collector's interior, an executive office, or a minimalist console.

About the Artist: Joe or Jo Rowland (1924–1996)
Joe Rowland was a British-born artist and ceramicist who became a prominent figure in the studio pottery movement in France during the 1960s and 1970s.
Educated at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London, Rowland moved to the South of France in 1965, settling in the Pyrénées-Orientales region. He spent a significant part of his career working at the renowned Sant-Vicens workshop in Perpignan, a creative hub where he collaborated with iconic artists such as Jean Lurçat.
Rowland’s work is celebrated for its Brutalist and architectural qualities. He specialized in high-fired grogged stoneware and porcelain, often characterized by a rigorous process of scarification and stamping. His signature style features repetitive geometric patterns—squares, diamonds, and linear motifs—pressed into the clay to create rhythmic, tactile surfaces. His palette remained deeply connected to the earth, favoring muted mineral tones of ochre, brown, and grey.
Today, Joe Rowland’s pieces are highly sought after by collectors of 20th-century ceramic art for their powerful presence and unique blend of British training and French Mediterranean influence. His work is represented in several public collections, including the Frac Occitanie Montpellier ( France ).
