USA, ca. 1970s. An intricately rendered and finely cast bronze sculpture of a human spinal column with pelvic bones. Anonymous and unsigned, it is masterfully executed with anatomical accuracy and clear emotional intensity. Something about its presence brings to mind Goya’s hanged men or Bacon’s slabs of meat. A not so subtle reminder that tempus fugit…
Hiding in plain sight, depictions of bones generally conjure of up images of death - yet they are critical to life itself. While a solo skull might suggest a vanitas painting, something about the spine connotes movement, support, and articulation.
Eerily beautiful with appropriate surface patina for its age.
