About the Item
A large and stunning modernist glazed ceramic sculpture featuring a double sided face by Argentinian sculptor Elio Ortiz. Inscribed 'E Ortiz, 85' at the base.
Born in Los Palacios, La Rioja, Argentina in 1944, Ortiz settled in Mendoza in 1962 and graduated from the School of Ceramics at the National University of Cuyo. He later served there as a professor, Director, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and President of the Provincial Institute of Culture.
Throughout his career, Ortiz exhibited widely across Argentina and received numerous distinctions, including top prizes at the Mendoza Biennial Salon, the Vendimia Salon, the National Ceramics Salons in Buenos Aires and Bariloche, and the Banco Comercial del Norte Salon in Tucumán. His work is celebrated for its fusion of pre-Columbian and Baroque influences, reinterpreted through a distinctly contemporary lens—situating his sculptures in a dynamic space between myth and utopia.
