About the Item

A rare 'Caravanserraglio' centrepiece designed by Ettore Sottsass for Studio Alchimia, Milan, circa 1979. Conceived as part of Alchimia’s experimental Bauhaus series, this sculptural tabletop object exemplifies Sottsass’s radical approach to design at the end of the 1970s, shortly before the founding of the Memphis Group. Executed in painted wood, the work takes its name and inspiration from the historic caravanserai—architectural resting places that functioned as sites of exchange and encounter. Its square, architectural form and symbolic language reflect Sottsass’s interest in narrative, ritual, and the emotional dimension of objects. Produced in limited numbers and discontinued in the early 1980s, Caravanserraglio is today a highly sought-after and emblematic example of Italian postmodern design.
