About the Item

A cast bronze wall sculpture titled "Homenaje a Picasso " (Tribute to Picasso) by Mexican sculptor Germán Cueto. The sculpture depicts a Cubist style face inspired by the work of the Spanish painter. The sculpture is signed on the lower right. Germán Cueto (Mexico City, 1893 - 1975) was a Mexican sculptor and puppeteer. The son of an intellectual family, he left his inicial studies in chemistry and fled to Spain when the Mexican Revolution broke out. He met Fidencio Lucano Nava, an Academic sculptor who convinced him to study arts in Mexico City and Paris. A founder of the Stridentist Movement of Arts and Literature in the 1920's, Cueto developed his craft in Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland, where he developed friendships with prominent figures of European art. His work in Mexico was not as successful as other sculptors of his generation as he never followed the themes and figurative forms that dominated Mexican art in the first half of the 20th Century. However, he was given a retrospective in 1965 at the Museum of Modern Art. Cueto was one of the first "abstract artists" in Mexican art.
