Gustav Louis Kvapil (1914-2015) as born in Pilsen, the then Czech-speaking district southwest of the Chicago Loop. In the 1920's the family followed the American Dream and moved to a large brick bungalow in the City of Berwyn, a suburb west of Chicago. Gus majored in architecture at the Armour Institute (later IIT) in Chicago. Working two jobs to put himself through college, he graduated with honors at the height of the Great Depression. With architecture jobs scarce, Gus became a store manager for the Bata Shoe Company, where his bilingual Czech/English abilities were an important part of his job. He moved to Washington DC at the outset of WWII to work for the Navy; he loved to joke that during the war he "commanded a desk" in the U.S. Navy's Bureau of Ships.
In 1946, Gus and his bride Charline Robinson Kvapil (whom he met in the Bureau of Ships) moved to Phoenix, where he was a founder of Thunderbird Sales Corporation, a distributor of fire trucks and fire and safety equipment throughout the Southwest.
He designed and built the family's Mid-Century Modern Phoenix home, enlisting family members, friends and friends-of-friends in constant ongoing home improvements. Gus was a founder and President (1957-58) of Camelback Kiwanis Club, which built the Camp Fire Girls' Camp Wamotochick in Prescott over a number of years. He later retired to Scottsdale where he continued his avocations as a sculptor, painter, ceramist, gourmand, gardener, and golfer. - Source: AZCentral
