About the Item

This strikingly bold and well detailed Hand-Carved Mossi Tribe Ceremonial Wood Mask on Elevated Sculptural Base originates from Burkina Faso, Circa 1960. The Mossi people from which this mask originates are the largest ethnic group of Burkina Faso, where this piece was carved for use in a variety of ceremonial functions within their communities. The bottom piece of the mask is a vertical almond shape with closely spaced triangular cutouts to see through while wearing. Between these cutouts is ridge of pyramidal carved elements that lead upwards forming two animal horns with deep striated grooves, on top of which a human figure stands with minimal rounded forms and abstracted anatomy with stark facial features. Set behind the figure is a plank with a symmetrical geometric format which frames the figure and provides an eye catching profile when viewed from a distance. Formed from A single piece of light and soft wood from trees in the Ceiba genus is carved using adzes and knives while it is still moist, making it easier to shape. To finish the mask, sand and rough leaves are often used as a substitute for sandpaper. Geometric shapes, especially triangles, rectangles, and crescents, are then painted onto the surface. The colors come from a variety of sources like charcoal, soot, indigo, eggshell, hematite, kaolin, vegetable resin, and chalk, all mixed with either water or egg whites. This particular mask has blue pigment remaining a visible particularly on the sides. An incredible piece sure to capture the attention of those who love the finest quality African art from the 20th Century, this Mask will style well in a wide array of spaces and settings, from Mid-Century Modernist to Contemporary and Minimal Interiors. Hand-Sculpted French Cubist Abstract Sculpture in Terracotta Signed "Philip"
Located in New York, NY
This sophisticated and alluring Mid-Century Modern Sculpture was realized in France circa 1950. Executed in terra cotta with a oil rubbed bronze colored glaze, the work presents an abstract and dynamic form- bristling with verve. An elongated form rises from an elliptical base offering both smooth and curvilinear aspects as well as faceted ones concluding in a curved tongue-like appendage with a pointed end. Additionally, there is what appears to be a lug or nut cantilevering from side of the piece, suggesting metamorphosis or some kind of animatronic influence. The amorphic form recalls the highly stylized renderings of tools by Lee Lozano...
