About the Item
Stunning, complex tabletop sculpture executed in mild steel with wax coating by Junko Mori (b. 1974) comprising an aggregate of individually hand-forged components. An exquisite example of both contemporary Japanese craft and fine art. From the “Organism” series, circa 2010.
Junko Mori is a Japanese artist living and working in Wales. Having been trained as a blacksmith and educated in metalworking in both Japan and the UK, much of her practical knowledge was acquired while working 9 to 5 as a welder. Her earliest interest in biology and biological processes would inspire a vision influenced by the organic forms of the natural world and her technique of assembling individual, hand-forged components is one of painstaking precision and repetition - - something in which she finds a meditative solace. Working in a wide range of metals from silver to mild steel, her works range in scale from small, handheld objects to large, imposing sculptures.
She has been widely internationally exhibited over the last few decades and her work is held in both private and public collections which include the British Museum, National Museums Scotland, the Museum für Künst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, Germany, and the Honolulu Museum of Art.
“I am always drawn to the visual impact of an aggregate assembled with many small components and find infinite possibilities of the form multiplied by the vital power beyond the physical space, such as cell division through a microscope.” - Junko Mori
“To be able to display what I believe is Junko’s best work…means that we have really taken the best of contemporary Japanese expression through metal and are able to display it within this whole range of 20,000 years of Japanese art history.” - Nicole Rousmaniere - former Curator of Japanese Arts at the British Museum
