About the Item

Matéria Escura is a contemporary sculptural work that explores density not as mass, but as a spiritual and perceptual condition. The piece is composed of three elemental forces: a solid wooden block, a spherical bronze form, and a minimal steel base that anchors the structure to the ground. Rather than resting in a state of balance, the wooden block is deliberately displaced. One of its ends is supported by the bronze sphere, while the opposite end is anchored to the base. This creates a subtle but decisive tilt, causing two of its corners to remain suspended in the air. The sphere does not simply support the block — it disrupts it, shifting its axis and altering its relationship with gravity. This controlled imbalance is central to the work. The bronze sphere operates as an invisible force — a metaphorical presence that interrupts matter, producing tension, suspension, and silent movement. In this way, Matéria Escura addresses the idea of the divine not as something that decorates or embellishes, but as something that displaces, penetrates, and reorganizes matter from within. The sculpture belongs to Otávio Motta’s ongoing research into material sensitivity, where wood, metal, and form are treated not as inert substances, but as living fields of tension and energy. The work is intentionally reduced to its essential gestures: weight, suspension, contact, and void. There is no ornament, no narrative illustration — only the minimum necessary structure through which meaning can emerge. Through this radical simplicity, the piece achieves its intensity. The viewer is invited to perceive not only the physical composition, but the invisible forces acting upon it: gravity, pressure, equilibrium, and spiritual displacement. Matéria Escura stands as a meditation on how matter can be held, shifted, and quietly transformed by what cannot be seen.
