About the Item
Mid-20th Century Signed Ceramic Sculpture by Andrée
Michel Hirlet
An evocative hand-built French ceramic by Andrée and Michel Hirlet, created in Paris in the early 1960s. The piece embodies the Hirlets’ signature fusion of sculptural abstraction and spiritual figuration—its rounded, monolithic form is incised with a stylized human visage, evoking a sense of quiet introspection and timeless serenity.
The textured stoneware surface is finished in a layered blue-green celadon glaze that pools deeply in the recesses and fades toward the edges, revealing earthy clay undertones. The rhythmic vertical ridges on the reverse and the geometric contouring reflect the Hirlets’ interest in organic architecture and primitive symbolism.
The Hirlets, a husband-and-wife artistic duo, began collaborating in Paris in the early 1960s, developing a highly distinctive language of modernist ceramics. Their work has been exhibited internationally and remains celebrated for its fusion of form, glaze, and emotional depth.
Signed on the underside with the Hirlet’s mark.
