About the Item
Very rare and hard-to-find example, the Bronze medal Opus 294 was created by Miguel Berrocal as a commemorative piece for the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers in Gijón. The bronze medal exemplifies the Spanish sculptor's fascination with scientific complexity and interlocking forms, presenting a dual-sided relief that contrasts mechanical engineering with electrical innovation. This specific Miguel Berrocal work captures the essence of the 1980s industrial aesthetic through high-relief casting and intricate detailing typical of his puzzle sculptures.
The obverse side of the bronze medal, titled La Mecánica, features a stylized face constructed from mathematical formulas, geometric diagrams, and physics equations, surrounded by text referencing the institution. On the reverse, the design shifts to La Electricidad, depicting a profile formed by printed circuit board pathways and microchip patterns, showcasing a cybernetic approach to portraiture. The patinated surface highlights the depth of the casting, emphasizing the tactile quality of the relief. This Miguel Berrocal object serves as a tangible representation of the intersection between art and technology.
Cast in 1982, the piece includes the signature of the artist and specific lettering denoting Mechanical and Electrical Engineers. The item retains its original patina and measures 6 cm in diameter.
