About the Item

"Pair Of Modernist Sculptures Signed “jean Marie”, Attributed To Louis Smeyers (1923–2009)" Pair of Modernist Plaster Sculptures with Bronze Patina, Signed “Jean Marie”, Attributed to Louis Smeyers (1923–2009), Belgium, 1950–1970 A refined pair of modernist plaster-composite sculptures, each finely cast and finished with a warm bronze-style patina containing metallic pigments. One sculpture bears the signature “Jean Marie”, a documented pseudonym of Belgian artist and designer Louis Smeyers (1923–2009), active in the decorative arts during the 1950s–1970s. Each piece features a stylised profile head resting on a clean horizontal base. The geometric simplification of the forms, combined with subtle tribal-modern influences, reflects the aesthetic vocabulary associated with the Hagenauer Werkstätte (Vienna), whose modernist approach inspired numerous European artists of the period. The bronze patina applied over the grey plaster core is consistent with mid-20th-century Belgian and French workshop techniques. The fact that only one sculpture is signed aligns with standard studio practice of the time: the master cast carried the signature, while additional impressions remained unsigned to form a coherent decorative pair. Dimensions (each piece) Height: 22 cm Width: 37 cm Attribution Attributed to Louis Smeyers, signing under the name “Jean Marie”. Style, materials and technique match his documented work. Period Belgium, circa 1950–1970. Condition Very good vintage condition with light, age-appropriate wear.
