This unique patinated steel sculpture by Arnie Garborg is signed and dated, 1997. A hefty and sizable work of art, this Post-Modern piece can be used indoors or outdoors. ABOUT THE ARTIST: For 12 years Arnie Garborg worked in a studio in Seattle’s University District, where he created woodcarvings and bronze castings primarily for architects, designers and private collectors. As he progressed from wood to steel, he explored the interaction of metal and landscape, sometimes painting pieces bright as a tulip field, sometimes polishing them to reflect shifting light and sometimes allowing them to become naturally pitted with rust. Widely considered a master, he was represented by A New Leaf Gallery in Sonoma, Calif., and Sculpturesite Gallery in San Francisco. “Arnie Garborg, a resourceful autodidactic sculptor, constructs sometimes minimal, sometimes intricate, yet always fastidiously crafted steel sculpture with an illusionary twist. Playing with light and shadow, his painted or naturally rusted steel pieces make masterful use of positive and negative space,” the gallery said. Garborg describes his goal in an artist’s statement: “I strive to achieve visual harmonies that impart a sense of fulfillment, touch a basic instinct, and find satisfaction in pregnant form.” Sculptures in his “Bird Tree” series can be found in Spokane, La Conner, Shelter Bay, Mukilteo and West Seattle. Pieces in his “Double Column” series are in Mount Vernon, La Conner, Woodinville, Edmonds, Samish Island and Oak Harbor, and other pieces are scattered throughout the region. He has participated in invitational shows in Seattle, Mercer Island, Bellevue, Bellingham, San Juan Island, Camano Island and Berkeley, Calif. When Arnie Garborg began welding large pieces of metal together at age 70, he hadn't really thought about taking his artistic career to another level. No, the primarily wood craftsman was more interested in the personal satisfaction of exploring a different medium, one he thought would be more versatile. But eight years and many sculptures and art shows later, Garborg has made a name for himself as a highly skilled and creative metal sculptor. Standing outside of his workshop in an old dairy barn in Conway, Garborg only shakes his head self-effacingly and shrugs at the attention he's garnered. “I feel fortunate to be able to do this. Many artists work for years and can't make a living at it,” Garborg said in his quiet, thoughtful way. Garborg's unique metal sculptures have earned him the honor of the title of featured artist in the John L Scott Focus Gallery during the 47th annual Anacortes Arts Festival. Garborg's works are on display at a shop in La Conner and at A New Leaf Gallery in Berkeley, Calif. His works have been shown through the years at shows up and down the I-5 corridor and even in Norway. But many people know Garborg locally as the sculptor behind the intricate apple tree in downtown La Conner. Strolling through his workshop, Garborg stood beside a similar metal tree sculpture with dozens of small, pear-shaped leaves jutting from impossibly delicate metal branches. Some people have found Garborg's work to be surprisingly lifelike. “I was driving with a tree in the back of my truck and these people had been following me and I stopped and they stopped and a woman got out of the car and came up to me and said, ‘Is that a real tree?'” Garborg said with a smile. “She had been arguing with her husband about whether it was real or not.” But for the most part, Garborg concentrates on “big” abstract pieces of rusted metal designed to create optical illusions by playing with light and shadow. He doesn't visualize his art work before he begins. Rather, he waits for the “Muse” to grab him and move him step-by-step through a project. Sometimes, in the case of the round and much-shown sculpture “Maelstrom,” the muse is right on. Other times, “The Muse had a bad day,” Garborg said with a bitter grin. He grew up in Conway, graduated from Mount Vernon High School, and enlisted in the Army. After his military stint, he stayed in California, where he took a job working at a boatyard in Newport Beach through the 1950s. Garborg learned early on that he was destined to work with his hands.“I was not a brain-worker,” he said. He moved back to the Pacific Northwest in the 1960s and took jobs making wooden-boat hulls at several boatyards. He also found himself drawn to more intricate woodworking. He opened his own woodcarving shop in Seattle's University District in the 1960s, making woodcarvings and bronze castings on commission for architects, designers and private art collectors. He gained a reputation for his intricately carved wooden doors, and was featured in a “how-to” article in Sunset Magazine, explaining how to create carved doors. F. Barbedienne fonduer Ferdinand Barbedienne (6 August 1810 – 21 March 1892) was a French metalworker and manufacturer, who was well known as a bronze founder. The son of a small farmer from Calvados, he started his career as a dealer in wallpaper in Paris. In 1838 he went into partnership with Achille Collas (1795-1859), who had just invented a machine to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business selling miniatures of antique statues from museums all over Europe, thus democratising art and making it more accessible to households.[2] From 1843 they extended their scope by reproducing the work of living artists and also diversified by making enamelled household objects. With the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 the firm briefly had to switch to cannon founding owing to the shortage of metals but resumed business afterwards. Following Barbedienne's death in 1892, he was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery and the firm was carried on by his nephew Gustave Leblanc until 1952.
